Parallel Computer Centre
HPC Background: Established
The Parallel Computer Centre was established in September 1990 to combine the resources
provided under the High Performance Distributed Systems and Environments for Parallel
Computers initiatives. Funding was obtained under the UFC's initiatives on Software Environments for
Parallel Computers (SPEC) and High Performance Distributed Systems (HPDS).
Other funding bodies include HPDS, ISEPC and CSI. The staff include an overall manager, two senior
system analysts and four analyst programmers. The equipment includes DAP 510,
Parsys SuperNode, Meiko M40 and a Cray Y-MP EL.
There are six regional centres in the UK : Edinburgh,
Manchester,
London Consortium,
Southampton,
Cardiff
and Belfast with fifty
plus ongoing projects spanning the areas of Multimedia,
IKBS, Workstation Clusters and CBT
