Parallel Computer Centre Equipment

The equipment provided under the funding initiatives are:

- DAP 510 with 32x32 array of processors.
- Parsys Tandem Supernode with 32 T800's processors each with 4MB RAM. This was subsequently upgraded by the addition of 16 T800's from a system in use by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In addition 4 of the T800's had memory upgrades, 3 up yo 8MB and 1 up to 16MB, funded by Computer Centre. Both with Sun front ends. In addition the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics donated a Meiko M40 with 20 T800's each with 4MB RAM. This was subsequently upgraded to include 2 i860's each with 16MB RAM and a Sparc Node board for direct connection to the ethernet.

-In 1992 the Department of Applied Mathematics were successful in a bid for funding under the Computational Science Initiative. The University added 150k to the 100k awarded and a 4 processors Cray Y-MP EL with 1GB of RAM was purchased. The Parallel Computer Centre was responsible for drafting the Operational Requirements, selecting a typical job mix for benchmarking, supervision of the benchmarks and some negotiation with the vendors.

A cluster of Silicon Graphics workstations has been installed as part of an on-going project aimed at providing a complete environment for distributed clustered computing. The idea of clustered computing extends the traditional view of networked workstations to that of a single computational resource with a comprehensive range of support services.
