Introduction
What is ATM?
- Preferred architecture for implementing B-ISDN
- A form of packet transmission using fixed size packets called "cells"
- Asynchronous Time Division Multiplexing used
- Contrast with Synchronous Transfer Mode (STM) which is based on circuit switching
- International Standard - CCITT recommendations started in 1988. Now being driven by the ATM Forum
What is B-ISDN?
- B-ISDN: Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network
- CCITT Definition:
"a service requiring transmission channels capable of supporting rates greater than the primary rate"
- Two types of B-ISDN service:
- Interactive Services (conversational, messaging & retrieval)
- Distribution Services (with or without presentation control)
Why B-ISDN?
Why do we need it?
- New services such as:
- Teleconferencing
- Video on demand
- Video based education
- High speed data
- Existing services:
- Voice
- TV distribution
- Low speed data
- These could all be provided by a single network
