An Introduction to PVM
PVM is a public domain software package which may be installed on a wide
range of Unix based machines as well as a range of parallel architecture
computers. PVM permits a network of machines to be viewed as a single
parallel computing resource. PVM provides a console to manipulate this
resource and a library of communication routines to implement parallel
algorithms in C, C++ and Fortran using the message passing programming
paradigm.
This course should/can be combined with a course on the generic principles
of message passing.
The topics covered include:
- overview of PVM
- PVM console commands
- example program walk-through
- aimk - architecture independent makefiles
- dynamic process groups
- dynamic configuration
- XPVM - A Graphical Console and Monitor
- practical exercises and demonstration programs for all of the above
