Dr.R.Rankin





Title : Manager of the Parallel Computer Centre

Dr. Rankin graduated from Queen's University in 1976 with a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. From 1974 to 1982 he was employed as a member of the projects group within the Computer Centre at Queen's and worked on a number of database systems for organisations such as an independent television station , the Personnel Socila Services and the Cardiology Department at the Royal Victoria Hospital. In 1983 Dr. Rankin left Queen's to become director of a small start-up software company specialising in the production of software packages for the retail trade. During this period he implemened a point of sale package for a leading supermarket chain in the province and produced stock control systems for several other warehouse and distribution centres.

In 1986 Dr. Rankin returned to the Department of Computer Science at Queen's as manager of the department's micro computer laboratories. Dr. Rankin was involved with the early stages of developing courses within the Northern Ireland Transputer Centre which was set up as a joint venture between the Computer Science Departments of Queen's University and the University of Ulster. These courses demonstrated how to exploit the potential of a network of transputers and how to use transputers in embedded systems. Since 1990 Dr. Rankin has been on secondment as manager of the Parallel Computer Centre. In this role Dr. Rankin is responsible for the day to day management of the Centre.
